Startup of the Week: UniPlaces

Startup of the Week, Student - Posted: November 28, 2013

UniPlaces

UniPlaces is simple. It's the safe way to rent your next student home. Simple. Property owner? List your place (It's free). Student? Find the perfect place to spend your year. And you can complete the whole process online, you don't even have to get out of bed.

Originally from Lisbon, the startup has moved to London and plans to start there before eventually taking over the rest of Britain.

UniPlaces was actually born at a Startup Weekend in Lisbon in 2011. The 4 founders are Mariano Kostelec, Miguel Santo Amaro, Ben Grech & Leo Lara.

After the Startup Weekend they went on to raise $200k and then just recently a further $800k to expand into Britain.

The company motto is 'No surprises'! They want to ensure that when you move into your new place you feel right at home. The site feels very much like AirBnB and I was surprised by the range of places available. There were some very nice, but very pricey places but they also had plenty of proper student places, you know, cheap and simple.

The great thing about UniPlaces is that all places are verified. This means they have to meet certain criteria and all places are personally verified. Great for the consumer, I just wonder how resource intensive this might be as they grow, especially if things take off rapidly.
