Our startup of the week this week is Audiotrip.

Audiotrip is an app that offers audio and visual tours of cities. Audiotrip plan to be the ultimate guide to Europe. To do this Audiotrip have teamed up with BBC journalists, travel writers, storytellers and locals.

They create audio and visual guides for travelers, which are downloadable so no pesky roaming charges. They plan to start with guides in 24 cities. You can see which ones below:

After starting working on the MVP 2 years ago, Audiotrip has acquired 12,000 users. With funding last November they were able to accelerate development and grow users much faster.

So far they have created a free app. When you visit a point of interest you get a story connected to the place. Audiotrip have created a community of local storytellers giving you local knowledge, all the stories, the best places of the beaten track and help you feel more immersed into the local culture.

The inspiration? I asked the founders Michal and Olo who said, "We’ve always loved to travel and we have always been tech geeks. Every time we tried to use smartphones to explore new places it was a disappointment. So if no one else is willing to create it for us - we’ll have to do it on our own."

With cheaper travel in and around Europe and more and more looking to explore areas outside of the touristy spots, Audiotrip can potentially make a big splash in the highly competitive market by engaging local communities early on. it's a great differentiator to other travel guides and one which many are on the hunt for.
