Mark Zuckerberg plans to increase Facebook's staff count by up to 500 people this year, as it heads towards profitability by the end of 2010.
Mr Zuckerberg, chief executive officer of the social networking site, has outlined his plans to increase the number of employees working on the service by at least 50 per cent this year.
Facebook employs 1,000 people worldwide and approximately 50 in the UK, which is a commercial-only division. However, it is unclear whether the expansion of the team will affect only the engineering side of the company, or include the commercial operation too.
