The motivation and inspiration to pursue a dream or an idea can come from anything. Some people are inspired by music, some are inspired by their peer’s success. Alex Handy on the other hand was inspired through his public policy lecture held by President Paul Kagame.
This inspiration created the beginning for AIP which stands for African Innovation Prize, a business plan competition.
Alex uses AIP as a bridge between University of Cambridge and KIST (Kigali Institute of science and technology). Alex Handy and Julia Fan Li started AIP in 2009, whilst they were still students. AIP is a competition that helps encourage and lures positive competitive attitude from students within Kigali, Rwanda.
Alex Handy is also the founder and president of a student society called “Beyond Profit”, which began in March 2010. This organization believes that while you make money you can also make a difference.
Beyond Profit is designed to empower students, while it helps to broaden many students mindset as they begin their career life. It is predominantly aimed at young entrepreneurs, through holding many inspiring speaker events, workshops and many more. Beyond Profit are partners with AIP, while holding a social event called The Rwanda Entrepreneurship Week.
Alex Handy has been awarded “A social entrepreneurship catalyst” award by UNLTD. He is currently in the process of completing his degree whilst also aspiring for AIP to expand and become nationally recognized within Africa.
Away from his entrepreneurial goals, he also set a enjoyable task for himself, to ski for the next 10 months.
