Insider Trends is a London-based trendspotting consultancy started in June 2008 by Cate Trotter. The company offers services to help companies take the lead or remain at the forefront of their industry. Offering trend tours, trendspotting reports and business scenario planning workshops, Insider Trends has a variety of services for business and consumers alike.
Trend tours is part of Insider London and focuses on showing visitors and locals the hidden gems in the city of London, of which I can tell you there are many. Different themed tours are available including cutting-edge retail concepts, design and its intriguing and hidden secrets, revealing the most dynamic sides of the capital.
Cate graduated from a design degree at Goldsmiths in 2005 and worked as a marketing consultant for top brand such as Lloyds TSB, Tesco and Unilever. She took her knowledge, experience and creativity and put it into Insider trends when she was 25. The company is inspired by her love for discovering new, thought-provoking things.
Cate also takes on many speaking roles at the British Library where she gives 90 minute presentations on key trends for different industries.
One of the toughest jobs when she started her business was deciding on pricing and I think this is a problem many business owners have. What value do you put on your service?
Cate also has some advice for anyone starting a new business. How do you introduce your business to people? "I wished I'd known about how important it is to introduce people to your business by describing the problems it solves, not what it actually does. It makes people understand what you do much faster, and because of that you make it more likely that they'll want to work with you or buy stuff from you," says Cate.
Cate is a big follower of the 80-20 rule. She is disciplined in the philosophy, making sure she found what 20% will result in 80 percent of benefit to the business. Search optimization turned out to be most important.
This great advice was given got from John Williams. She also got great inspiration from a book called the The 4-Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss, which I believe every budding entrepreneur should read.
Ad remember when starting your own business 'Have fun with it!'
