Luis Hindman is a 12 years old Youtube content creator.I recently got the opportunity of speaking to him on how he got into making Youtube videos and his creative process.
This is what we spoke about.
Hi Luis, How are you doing, great to have you on YHP?
Great! I recently became a partner with Fullscreen.net
Introduce yourself to the YHP readers?
I am 12 years old and I am a young content creator. I make technology videos and short films on Youtube. I am officially a full Youtube partner with Fullscreen. I upload videos once a week every Saturday.
How did you get into doing Youtube videos? How did the idea come about?
I started watching a few tech videos by a user called ‘soldierknowsbest’ and then started watching action videos from finalcutking, freddiew, usnfilms and corridor digital. This inspired me to start doing it myself so I started of with my 3.2mp camera on my phone and iMovie and started straight away!
What softwares and equipments do you use in creating your videos?
My camera is the Canon EOS 600D and I use the 18-55mm kit lens but mainly the 50mm 1.8 Prime lens. I edit all my videos on a 2011 Macbook Pro. The software depends on the video, for tech videos I will use Final Cut Pro X but for films I will use After Effects, Premiere, Cinema 4d and Photoshop.
Who are your inspirations and why?
My inspirations and Steven Spielberg and Steve Jobs, Steven Spielberg produces phenomenal films and action movies which inspires me for my films and whenever I watch one of his movies I will just want to go and make a movie! Steve Jobs is really inspirational in terms of technology; the fact that he owned a company that made Tablets, MP3 Players, Laptops, Desktop Computers and Phones is amazing! Also, apple in terms of software is incredible they create really good software such as Final Cut Pro and Aperture for a quality price. Most of my work is done using Apple products. Apple is one of the most searched technology company on Youtube and without Apple’s products views for tech reviewers would drop dramatically.
What has been your biggest challenge since launching both Youtube channels?
My biggest challenge has probably been re-branding my main channel, the user name is sutol226 which is a silly name I made up when I was little so I decided to use it. When I became a partner I re-branded everything to Think Creations. Inside of Think Creations there is:
Tech Online tech reviews and blog, LFHFilms, Vetron Games
What are the most crucial things that you've done to grow the Youtube channels?
I think creating a schedule and focusing more on presentation and editing is crucial to how my channel has grown and I would say those things are the points you need to prioritise when making a video
What would you say has been the highlight of your journey so far?
Partnering with Fullscreen.net was great and that was a key moment in my youtube journey, which will never be forgotten
What can we be expecting from you in 2012? Will you be launching another other projects?
I have just released (June 2nd) my biggest project yet, Data Storm: A Short Action Film, it is something I have been working on for four months and you should definitely go and check it out at youtube.com/sutol226
What three pieces of advice would you offer to other teens like yourself interested in technology and thinking about starting little projects?
The three pieces of advice are:
1. Have fun with what you want to do because if you don’t enjoy it you wont come across as a happy and enthusiastic person, this can effect your customers/audience.
2. Know what you want to do, whether that is marketing, content creation etc. You have to be certain you are doing the right thing and what is best for you, for example, I am a tech and film enthusiast so it wouldn’t make sense for me to go and make videos about cooking, I know that’s a silly example but it demonstrates what I am trying to say. Do what you enjoy because then everyone’s happy.
3. Advertise and promote as much as possible. Whether that is tweeting, putting up posters, emailing businesses, it all works. If you ever need a product to review every company will have a press page or a contact us section at the bottom of their site. Just go to that section and contact them. Try not to message people on Youtube or Twitter saying ‘Hi bro, Eppicc! I luv ur channel! How bout u sub to me and I sub u bro?, no that stuff doesn’t work and whenever people send me those messages I just delete them because it isn’t professional and it teaches them to find a better way to advertise.
