The British Bill Gates – Carl Churchill and DMC Internet

Start-Ups - Posted: August 23, 2010

Carl Churchill

Carl Churchill is the founder of DMC Internet, which provides internet services such as wireless broadband and server security.

Carl started in business, freelancing at just 12 and by the age of 19 he had become a millionaire. DMC was founded in July 2000, when Carl was 17. To provide such a complex service at such a young age required Carl to have an extensive knowledge of the internet and the services that he provided. This led to him becoming known as the British Bill Gates.

He was the director of DMC Internet which at the peak was valued at £20million. He soon sold this too invest in MurphX, another Internet Service Provider (ISP).

He has been recognised from an early age, and was head hunted at the age of 15 by BITS New Media where he stayed for a couple years before leaving to start his own business.

Carl Churchill took £5,000 of his own savings to fund the launch of DMC Internet. The company was started just after the internet boom was over, which for Carl was a good thing, as he wanted to prove that his business would succeed in its own right and not just because it was riding the crest of a wave.

After 2 years Carl had managed to acquire some large business contracts with the likes of the NHS and the department of education.

Carl found that his biggest obstacle was getting customers to trust him as he was only 19. Soon he found that once he was able to explain what capabilities they had, customers began to trust him because they could see he was genuine. Sometimes youth came as a benefit because companies would be looking for people full of new fresh ideas.

Carl was nominated as one to watch for the future when he was 16 years old.
By 2003 Carl was named as top of the Independent 2020 Rich List, a list of teenagers who are most likely to be the highest earners come 2020.

Carl was rather daunted by the prospect, as he was ahead of the likes of Kiera Knightly, who he had gone to watch on the big screen in Pirates of the Caribbean just after the list was released.
