Start-Ups - Posted: May 3, 2010

Alex Tew

Alex Tew is the 27 years old founder of popjam and the creator of the famous million dollar homepage which he created after he wanted to raise money for his university education and thought of the brilliant plan of creating the million dollar homepage, a website where advertisers could buy ad space for $1 per pixel on a 1000 x 1000 pixel grid.

Alex who was about to start a three year business management degree at the university of Nottingham began to think that after he finished his degree he would be left with a debt of his student loan to repay which would take him years.

The site was Launched on 26 August 2005 and three days after the launch, he made his first sale to his friend who ran a music website, followed by his other friends and family buying a total of 4,700 pixels.

After the site had made $1,000, a press release was sent out that was picked up by the BBC, Tew also appeared on the national breakfast television programmes Sky News Sunrise and BBC Breakfast to discuss the website and you could say the rest is history, as he became an instant hit and a internet celebrity over the course of 5 months which his site was estimated to have generated at least $1,000,000

Tew told his customers that the site would remain online for five years – that is, until at least 26 August 2010.

After costs, taxes and a donation to The Prince's Trust, a charity for young people, Tew expected his net income to be $650,000–$700,000

Tew started another company popjam which was a aggregation site that collects all the funny pictures and movies that you come across online in one place and enables you to share them with friends.

In an Article on Techcrunch on 7th January 2010
, Alex decided to call it a day on Popjam and now sets on his another project.
