Interview with Artist/Graphics Designer

Hi will, thank you very much for taking the time for this interview. Can you tell our readers a little about yourself, what you do and where you’re from?
My name’s Will Kay artist and graphic designer from east London

Tell us about the ODDKINGDOM brand?
ODDKINGDOM brand is will offer unique artwork, photography, digital artwork and clothing for people from all walks of life.

How did you get started?
I started out from my days at college, that’s when I decided I wanted to go into the creative industry. I began by creating my own style, freelancing and promoting myself.

What are the tools you use (softwares, apps, etc…) ?
To create all my illustrations I use fine/bold maker pens, matt paper, and A3 scanner to bring out the detail of the images.
For all my graphic design, I have always used adobe Photoshop, (used it to create CHAOS Season images)

What would be your best productivity tip?
The best productivity tip I would give to anyone would be stay motivated at all times, follow your own vision and pathway.
What did you want to be when you were little?
From the age of 8 I wanted to be a track and field athlete or anything to do with sports, but as I got older I realised I had talent for art and design.

Where do you find inspiration? How do you come up with those amazing ideas?
My inspirations come from the different genres of music I listen to, from Coldplay to Lil Wayne, an artist named H.R. Giger has also been large influence to me, because of he’s own style of art and not afraid to share it with the world
My ideas all come from my mind, thoughts, things I dream of. My own Oddkingdom.

Who are the designers you like and inspire you? And what sites do you visit, or what do you do to get inspiration?
Designers that I like are Shepard Fairey and H.R.Giger. One of my favourite sites that I visit is obeygiant.com, creativereview.co.uk and hypebeast.com

Do designer get designer’s block and how do you overcome it?
O yes! I get that sometimes, I overcome it by not touching the apple Mac for the whole day, watch a DVD, then next day, I will feel refreshed with new ideas.

What do you most enjoy about being a graphic designer?

What I enjoy about being a graphic designer is the freedom of creativity, I am doing what I love, so it come very natural to me. I always have ideas for everything, sometime come with so much that I forget, and then my notebook comes out!

What's the most challenging part of your work?
The most challenging part of my work is creating something new that hasn’t been done already! Creating style that people recognise you for.

What skills are most important for a designer?
Most important skills that designer need to have is to be able to multi task; it takes a while to learn design programs. But it is essential for a graphic designer.

What are you working on right now?
Right now I am working on building the brand ODDKINGDOM, I will be putting out more artwork, exhibitions, clothing and other projects, which I can’t mention at the moment.

What are your plans for future designers?
My point of view for futures designers is they maybe less creative, recycling old designs as new!

What would you say to anyone out there trying to be a professional artist/graphics designer?
I would say, you to put in time, and effort for people to take you serious. Don’t be afraid to experiment; be open minded about the world around you. Follow your own pathway and stay motivated.
